Erica Silen, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

About

I am a board-certified, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner specializing in diagnosis, medication management, and therapy. Since graduating from Columbia School of Nursing in 2012, I have gained extensive experience treating children, adolescents, adults, and families with a wide range of symptoms.

Addressing mental health issues can be scary, especially for children and parents. I work with families to create a calming and trusting environment. Clients and families are encouraged to discuss their wants, needs, and fears, which in turn helps to destigmatize the process.

Trained in motivational interviewing, I incorporate many of the skills I acquired in my daily practice, including active listening, reflection, and meeting clients "where they are at." I conduct a thorough evaluation and use evidence-based practice in order to better target treatment options.

Once the evaluation is completed, I will review the pros and cons of each option and work together with the client to find the best possible course of action. My availability includes some evening and weekend appointments in order to accommodate work and school schedules.

Services

Psychiatric Evaluation

An interview process to help better understand the symptoms, struggles, weaknesses, strengths, biological factors and psychosocial support and stressors impacting an individual's emotional, social and academic/financial wellbeing.

Medication Management

If determined beneficial and warranted, medication may be part of the treatment. During the first medication management session options will be discussed and risks, benefits, side effects and dosing instructions will be reviewed.

Therapy

Therapy is a fundamental part of mental health treatment and overall wellbeing. While some symptoms can be managed with medication alone, many are best treated with therapy and for some behaviors, there is no pill that will help, and therapy is the only form of treatment. Most often therapy and medication work best in conjunction with each other and together they provide synergistic effects.
